About williammorrisprints.org

williammorrisprints.org is a pattern library and print shop run by ArtsyWall. We document the history of historic decorative patterns and offer them as physical art prints and seamless pattern files.

Who runs this site

williammorrisprints.org is a pattern library run by ArtsyWall, an online wall art store. We created this resource so you can study patterns by name, motif, color and type, including wallpapers, chintzes and woven textiles. You can browse every William Morris design, with year, designer and type in our catalog. A sister site, williammorriswallpapers.com, sells these same patterns as peel-and-stick wallpaper.

We are an independent archive and retailer. We are not connected to, licensed by or approved by any museum, the William Morris Society, the William Morris Gallery or the owner of the Morris & Co. brand today.

Where the pattern images come from

Our pattern images come from public-domain (CC0) museum scans. William Morris died in 1896, J.H. Dearle in 1932 and May Morris in 1938, placing their surviving works in the public domain. Each design page on our site lists the specific museum scan and its license.

We use these high-resolution records to prepare prints and seamless pattern files. A seamless pattern file captures one repeat tile of an original design. When set edge to edge or in a half-drop shift, the tiles align without visible seams for fabric printing and craft projects.

How we name the designers

We identify the real designer responsible for each pattern. Many designs sold as William Morris patterns today were created by John Henry Dearle. Others on the site are by May Morris or Kate Faulkner.

When Dearle designed a pattern, our catalog attributes it to him directly. If historical records do not name a specific person, we state that Morris & Co. issued the pattern and the individual designer is not recorded.

Questions and answers

Who runs williammorrisprints.org?

williammorrisprints.org is run by ArtsyWall, an online wall art store. ArtsyWall produces and ships made-to-order wall art across the United States. Through this library, ArtsyWall provides detailed historical documentation for Victorian decorative patterns alongside physical art prints and digital design downloads. The team manages the pattern catalog, prepares museum scans for reproduction, and oversees customer service for print orders.

Is this site connected to a museum?

No, williammorrisprints.org is not affiliated with or endorsed by any museum. The site is also completely independent from the William Morris Society, the William Morris Gallery, and the modern commercial firm that owns the Morris & Co. brand name. While we credit the cultural institutions that host original objects and scans, our pattern library operates as a private commercial venture.

Where do the pattern images come from?

The pattern images on williammorrisprints.org come from open-access, public-domain museum scans. Because William Morris died in 1896 and his associates passed away in the 1930s, these historic designs are no longer protected by copyright. Cultural institutions publish digital captures under CC0 public-domain designations. We retrieve these source files, reference the holding institution on each design entry, and format the artwork for print production.
